Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. It is a safety warning that is engraved on the passenger side mirrors of motor vehicles.
It is indeed a safety warning on motor vehicles, but it is also a warning to our lives. Your past is always close to you. It is where you came from, but it does not define where you are going. It is close enough to steer you in the wrong direction, if you let it, but it does not have to be the thing that drives you forward.
No one driving can stay in their assigned lane while only looking backwards. It can cause terrible accidents, and damage to the body. There are times when calling the past to remembrance is important, but staring at it is a wreck waiting to happen.
Let your eyes look forward; fix your gaze straight ahead.
Proverbs 4:25
The Lord has your back covered. He walked through that with you. He sat with you in the midst of those hardships. There were times when he had the wheel, and other times when you recklessly travelled places without His directions. But you were never alone. He was always with you. Even when you didn't see Him seated patiently in the backseat, waiting for a chance to point you in the direction of the future he had for you. He was there.
13) No, dears brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14) I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Philippians 3:13-14
But now, and every moment of now that will ever come, He wants you to look forward. Your past is an important part of who you are, but it's not the only part. Your present needs your presence and your future is waiting for you to arrive. God wants to unveil these moments with you, but if you're stuck in the past, your present looks like a replay of where you've been and your future seems nonexistence.
Give your past over to the Lord and he will turn things around for you.
And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28
